POSITION DESCRIPTION


The key responsibilities of the Head of the Department include:

  • Department Management: planning, organizing, and coordinating the work of the Department’s research and teaching team.

  • Representation: participating in the work of the institute and faculty councils; representing the Department in national and international contexts; building partnerships with academic institutions and cultural or educational organizations.

  • Research Activity: initiating and conducting research projects; participating in academic conferences; publishing in leading journals and publishing houses; securing research funding.

  • Teaching Activity: delivering academic courses, including seminars and discussion classes in the fields of German studies, the history and culture of Germans in Poland, and Polish-German relations; supervising theses; mentoring early-career researchers

  • Defining research directions related to multiculturalism, multiethnicity, and cultural memory in Łódź and the surrounding region.

  • Coordinating interdisciplinary projects carried out by teams of researchers from various units of the University of Łódź and partner institutions.

  • Organizing conferences, seminars, and academic debates aimed at disseminating research findings and fostering collaboration between scholars and local stakeholders (such as museums, archives, and community organizations).

  • Cooperating with cultural and educational institutions to promote knowledge about the multicultural heritage of Łódź.

  • Editing and publishing scholarly materials, including monographs, research reports, and source editions documenting the city’s multiethnic history.

  • Building an international network of research collaboration, particularly within projects focused on European urban history, cultural borderlands, and collective memory.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE


Dr hab. Monika Kucner, Professor at the University of Łódź, is a Germanist, literary scholar, and cultural historian of Łódź. She has been affiliated with the University of Łódź for many years, successfully combining academic, teaching, and organizational responsibilities.

Education and Academic Advancement:

Prof. Monika Kucner earned her master's degree at the University of Łódź, writing her thesis under the supervision of Professor Krzysztof A. Kuczyński. She also completed her doctoral dissertation under his guidance. She received her postdoctoral degree (habilitation) from the Faculty of Philology at the University of Łódź and was awarded the academic title of Professor at the University of Łódź in 2021.

Academic Positions and Functions:

  • From 2004 to 2006, she served as head of part-time studies at the Department of German Studies on the Faculty of International and Political Studies at the University of Łódź.

  • Since 2007, she has been affiliated with the Faculty of Philology – initially as an assistant professor at the Department of Literature and Culture of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and later at the Institute of German Philology.

  • In 2015, she obtained her habilitation degree.

  • Since 2016, she has been head of the Department of German Studies, as well as director of the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Multicultural and Multiethnic Łódź and the Region.

  • In 2021, she was appointed Professor at the University of Łódź.

Academic Work and Institutional Engagement:

Monika Kucner's research focuses on the German-language culture and literature of Łódź, Polish-German relations, and the city’s multicultural heritage. She regularly participates in academic conferences, co-edits scholarly volumes, and collaborates with national and international research centers.
